Upper Respiratory Endoscopy & Treatment

Respiratory function plays a vital role in a horse’s overall health and performance, particularly for athletes in training or competition. Even mild airway restrictions or inflammation can significantly impact stamina, recovery, and comfort.

At 509 Equine, we offer upper respiratory endoscopy as a diagnostic tool to evaluate the nasal passages, pharynx, larynx, and trachea. This minimally invasive procedure allows for direct visualization of the upper airway to identify conditions such as:

  • Inflammatory airway disease (IAD)

  • Equine asthma

  • Laryngeal hemiplegia (roaring)

  • Dorsal displacement of the soft palate (DDSP)

  • Exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH)

Using real-time video, we can assess structural or functional abnormalities and determine appropriate treatment plans—from medical management and environmental adjustments to further diagnostics or referral when needed. Endoscopy is often recommended for horses with unexplained poor performance, nasal discharge, coughing, or abnormal breathing sounds during exercise.
